Welcome!
At some point in our careers, some people feel compelled to do something beyond their day jobs – to give back to the profession and coach new people in the field. The need to keep improving the profession is particularly significant in product management, since there are many paths into product management and a wide variety of opinions of what exactly product managers should be doing… and what they should not be doing.
Even in situations with general agreement on the types of things that PMs are doing, there is a wide gap between the “state of the art” in modern product management, and the current state of operations in many product-producing organizations. While some “early adopters” are doing just fine, there is a huge “late majority” who do not yet even realize that they are not prepared for impactful product management in the not-too-distant future.
All of this makes a career transition for new product managers particularly risky, since they will be developing skills under the guidance of people who may or may not follow where the industry is going, or what skills are really important for future growth in the discipline.
This site is therefore intended to serve multiple purposes:
- allow me, and eventually others, to share experiences and personal insights on best practices in modern product management,
- collect observations on product successes and failures in the real world. Please contribute!
- host a living resume/CV of my product work, inside and outside of traditional work,
- provide therapy to those (like me) who need to know that they’re not alone in being dissatisfied with the status quo and looking to improve the practice of product management.
This site will show a bias toward software product management, although a lot of the techniques can be adapted and applied in other industries as well.
Stay tuned as this site develops!
